While the Hanging Gardens of Babylon may have been a story told by the soldiers of Alexander the Great, Nebuchadnezzar's other splendors, especially the Gate of Ishtar, were real. In fact, archaeologists transported the entire gate--one of eight gates that led into the city--to the famous Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, and reconstructed it to almost its exact proportions. Originally built in 575 B.C., the archway stood 45 feet tall--with blue-glazed bricks upon which figures of dragons, lions, and bulls looked down on visitors to the city. The Gate of Ishtar was the starting point of the processional way, the parade route for Babylon's triumphant army.
