CHICAGO _ That darn Frank Thomas has just set off the fireworks again.
He has just creamed a fat, hanging slider tossed up to the plate by Kansas City's Mark Gubicza. The baseball sails 419 feet before it lands 10 rows into the crowded left-field bleachers at Comiskey Park. Now the big pinwheels atop the scoreboard in center are spinning round and round. Fireworks are shooting out of the top of the scoreboard and exploding into the cloudless twilight as Thomas lopes around second base. The fans are going nuts.
In any other summer, the rest of the baseball world would also be going nuts over the prodigious feats of Thomas, the gargantuan 6-foot-5, 257-pound first baseman ...
