Dec. 1--Walter Simmons was a Chicago Tribune writer and editor who covered battles in the South Pacific during World War II and wrote stories on the outbreak of the Korean War from Seoul. Mr. Simmons, 98, died Saturday, Nov. 25, of heart failure in an adult home in Bear Lake, Mich., said his daughter, Lyn O'Halloran. A dry-humored man who initially appeared grumpy to younger reporters, Mr. Simmons returned to Chicago from the Far East in 1955 and served as editor of the Sunday paper and the Sunday magazine before his retirement in 1973.
