Dec. 1--WESTCLIFFE - For two decades, glass blower Doug Bayer has created functional art emulating the ancient European style he learned from a Swedish master. Bayer, who had left his steady paying job as a helicopter technician in Alaska in 1980 to become a stained glass artist, has embraced the artistic lifestyle and found it to be profitable.
He attended Pilchuck glass school in 1986, where he met the foremost Swedish glassblower, Jan Erik Ritzman. Ritzman offered to take Bayer under his wing and the American went to Sweden to work, learn the art and learn about Swedish culture. A year later, Bayer came to Colorado to ...
