This slim volume is compromised primarily essays originally delivered (in earlier versions) at "The Agee Legacy" conference, held in March of 1989 at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Perhaps because they were first intended for a listening audience, the six critical essays included here seem (as James Agee once said about his own writing) to have been "written with reading aloud in mind." They are clear and well-structured, and also tend towards brevity. Furthermore, several of the essays (not unexpectedly) link Knoxville's native son to a Southern sense of place.
