These days, the chances are that your newspaper is telling you more about Poland's expatriate workers than about the ones who choose to stay at home. Except for those rare occasions when we British actually need a Polish plumber--or a minimum-wage chambermaid, or a bricklayer, or a barman--it seems that we would rather complain about these hardworking and poorly paid people than applaud them for the unsung heroes they often are. Your opinion might differ, of course. But, whatever your viewpoint about Britain's 200,000-strong Polish contingent, we can hardly get away from the fact that the Poles, on the whole, are a model of diligence and endurance.
