Article: Mercury News reaches tentative agreement with guild.

Dec. 4--The San Jose Mercury News has reached a tentative agreement with the San Jose Newspaper Guild for a two-year contract that significantly reduces the number of layoffs the newspaper was planning.

Under the agreement, reached this morning after a 20-hour bargaining session that began Sunday, management will lay off up to 27.5 full-time positions represented by the guild, rather than the 69 previously announced.

The contract would also resolve key jurisdictional issues in order for the paper to use the resources of the Mercury News' new owner, MediaNews, which owns eight other Bay Area papers.
