Low-cost, civilian Standard Positioning Service (SPS) GPS technology can appear desirable for some military applications and even operational fielding. Significant concerns abound, however, including misunderstandings of operational tradeoffs and increased exposure to the specific threats that Precise Positioning Service (PPS) GPS in part exists to directly counteract. This article presents an updated comparison of PPS and SPS issues relevant to the military environment.
