Dec. 6--Miner's Day commemorates those now working in all West Virginia mines, those who have worked in the mines and those who lost their lives in mining accidents.
The West Virginia Legislature set Dec. 6 to recognize miners because it marks the anniversary of the nation's worst coal mine disaster.
On Dec. 6, 1907, an explosion tore through the Monongah No. 6 and No. 8 mines, with an impact felt eight miles away.
