CARTERET, N.J. -- Intent on broadening its market share and rebuilding its East Coast operations, Herman's Sporting Goods Inc. has acquired Croydon, Pa.-based Gold Medal Sporting Goods.
Herman's will acquire 12 of the retailer's 17 stores, with the remaining five units ceasing operations. With Gold Medal under its belt, Herman's said its presence in the Philadelphia market will climb to 28 stores that will bring it $60 million in annual sales.
Gold Medal Sporting Goods Stores range in size from 6,000-8,000 square feet. Robert Shennett, general merchandise manager at Gold Medal, said he expects Herman's to expand some units, but not all.
