Dec. 7--It was just before 8 a.m. in Hawaii on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941 -- 65 years ago today. The Japanese had secretly sent several aircraft carriers across the Pacific Ocean, carrying greater "aerial striking power than had ever been seen on the world's oceans," according to the U.S. Naval Historical Center. More than 400 Japanese fighter planes attacked Pearl Harbor. Five of the eight U.S. battleships there were soon sunk or sinking. Many of the Hawaii-based fighter planes at nearby airfields were damaged. More than 2,400 Americans were killed.
