Dec. 7--Franciscan Workers member Robert Smith, director of Dorothy's Place, has fretted for more than a year about the impending expiration of a permit to operate the popular soup kitchen for the homeless.
On Wednesday, after the Salinas Planning Commission unanimously extended that permit indefinitely, he was almost giddy. "We're excited about our future," Smith said. "We anticipate increasing our (collaboration) with other groups that offer services. This is the first step. The next step is to end homelessness. We have the capability to get there."
