Dec. 8--DELAND -- Lovers of the traditional holiday classic The Nutcracker may want to hold onto their toy soldier hats. The Sands Theater Center and the Academy of Dance Arts are turning the traditional ballet on its head with a production that replaces Tchaikovsky's classical score with a jazzy, big-band interpretation by Duke Ellington. "Nutcracker Nouveau," which will be presented this weekend at the DeLand High School Theater, features mostly young dancers from the academy and actors from Sands' Storybook Theater Company.
