GARY SPEED is a football marathon man as he clocks up his 500th Premiership appearance - but owes his long-playing record to being out paced by Gordon Strachan.
Speed will reach his personal milestone for Bolton Wanderers today but it was watching the older Strachan run away from him when he was a Leeds United prospect that changed his outlook.
