All through November, Mansfield's Ryan Collins used his strength on the hills to bury the competition.
So when the Division 2 state champion put his head down, started pumping his arms and attacked "The Hill" with 1,000 meters remaining in yesterday's Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships, only good things were going to happen.
Collins surged over the crest and used his speed over the sloping downhill and into the finish of Balboa Park's 3.1-mile course in San Diego. He crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 52 seconds for 17th place, closing the book on his season.
