Second Pirates film sells 5 million units on first day

The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest dug up first-day sales treasure of 5 million units, according to distributor Buena Vista Home Entertainment, and is widely perceived as on track to be the No. 1 title of 2006.

The DVD's Dec. 5 haul equaled the 5 million units sold on the first day of Warner Home Video's March release Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , which had held the 2006 first-day trophy to this point.

Based on first-day sales, studio sources believe Dead Man's Chest is on pace for first-week sales of 10 million copies.
