IN 2005 Berg earned Bo Carpelan his second Finlandia Prize (the first was for Urwind in 1993) and is the first writer to date to have done so (see WLT 58:1, pp. 47-48). Carpelan (of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland) is widely regarded as "the foremost writer in the Swedish language today." Born in 1926, he has published a number of volumes of poetry as well as prose and earned numerous other Scandinavian literary prizes.
