The recent upsurge of anthropological interest in Afro-Cuban religions has focused mainly on Yoruba-related Santeria and, to a lesser extent, the 'secret society' of Abakua, with its Efik-lbibio connections. The important branch of Afro-Cuban religion known as Palo Monte or Regla Conga, in contrast, has been largely neglected by ethnographers. This study helps to redress this imbalance.
