Merger could lift Denver Joining Continental, United would likely add domestic flights.(Business)

Denver likely would benefit from a merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines, gaining a stronger dominant carrier that could add domestic and even international flights here, observers say.

The downside of such a merger - which is just in the discussion phase at this point - appears minimal.

United and Continental don't have much overlap in Denver and therefore likely wouldn't have to cut back much on workers, gates and other assets, experts say. And competition at Denver International Airport would remain stiff, helping keep a lid on fares.
