On Election Day, there were at least 6,129 legislative seats up for election. Some 10,728 candidates ran for those seats under the banner of 38 different party designations. The Republican party fielded 4,795 candidates and the Democratic party had 5,135. There were 798 people runn ing who are affiliated with third parties--mostly independents, greens and libertarians. One man in Vermont represented the "Wingnut" party.
According to Professor John McGlennon and research assistant Cory Kaufman at the Thomas Jefferson Public Policy school at the College of William and Mary, 2,175 candidates ran without opposition from the other major party. That is roughly in line ...
