For more than 20 years, opens and shorts have been the top producer of scrap in almost every multilayer PCB in the world. Many of the larger factories waste millions of dollars each year, especially in inner layer defects.
Many vendors and PCB shops have tried to tackle this complex problem with limited success. The problem is that the defects cut across many processes, materials and chemistries, so no one vendor or internal engineering department is responsible for the defects in their entirety.
