The Caspian Sea is rising and no-one knows quite why. This may not affect the Middle East directly, but it serves as a warning lesson. The dangers of oil production and major industrial activity along the shores of inland or relatively restricted seas should be borne in mind by the industrialising countries of the Gulf.
HEAVY TANKER traffic, if nothing else, long ago forced the littoral states of the Mediterranean, Arabian Gulf and Red Sea to be aware of the threat from pollution. Until recently, mostly hidden behind the Iron Curtain, the countries along the Caspian were able to be more complacent.
