Dec. 15--When Mike McMenamin heard the $525,000 price for the Little Chapel of the Chimes in North Portland, he wondered what was wrong with it.
"I loved the building from the time I first saw it," said McMenamin, 55. "They told me the price and I asked them what the catch was. They said, 'Well, it's an old mortuary. . .' And I said, 'We'll take it.' "
That was late 2005. This week, Chapel Pub opened as the latest watering hole and new corporate headquarters for McMenamins Inc., which began with a single Southeast Portland pub 23 years ago and now employs 1,900 people at more than four dozen eclectic outlets.
