Dec. 16--Just a week before the year's shortest day and longest night, Jews worldwide began Friday at sundown their annual feast of lights, Hanukkah. It's an eight-day festival observed in Jewish homes by the lighting of candles on each of the eight nights, one on the first night, two on the second night and so on. At Temple Emanuel, 1325 N. Grand Ave., local Jews gathered Friday evening for the Hanukkah Latke Fress, sharing food and lighting menorahs, the nine-branched candelabra. At 4 p.m. (EST), the so-called National Menorah was lit in Washington, D.C., on the Elipse, between the White House and the Washington Monument. ...
