David Macaulay, author/illustrator of Castle, The Way Things Work (both Lorraine/ Houghton), and many other children's books on architecture and engineering, has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.

The 2006 James Madison Book Award goes to Tonya Bolden's Maritcha: A Nineteenth-Century American Girl (Abrams). Established by Lynne Cheney, the award recognizes "excellence in bringing knowledge and understanding of American history to children ages five to fourteen."
