Data from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey show that in the past 2 decades, the percentage of children aged 6-11 years that are overweight has doubled, and the percentage of children aged 12-19 years that are overweight has tripled. (1) Body mass index (BMI) is frequently used to evaluate adult overweight and obesity, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended the use of BMI for both clinical work and epidemiological research in children and adolescents.
