Halifax -- On Oct. 4, 2006, Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Peter Richard struck down regulations in the province's Retail Business Uniform Closing Day Act which had limited Sunday shopping in the province. In spite of a 2004 plebiscite on the issue, where more than half of Nova Scotians who voted favoured the retention of the restrictions, Premier Rodney MacDonald elected not to appeal the decision. The change now leaves only Prince Edward Island retaining Sunday business closures, and even it permits opening on the four Sundays preceding Christmas.
