Latinos in the United States have been described as a people "in flux." (1) In 2004, an estimated 40.4 million Latinos were living in the country, representing 14% of the total population. (2) Because a large proportion are of childbearing age, the Latino population is projected to reach 60.4 million by 2020; Latinos are expected to account for 46% of the nation's population growth over this period, and non-Latino whites for 24%.
