Environmental groups are warning that the White House could remove a ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in Alaska's Bristol Bay as early as next week.
David Gordon, executive director of Pacific Environment, said his group has heard from several sources within the oil industry that President Bush is considering lifting the moratorium.
Pacific Environment, the Wilderness Society and others sent a letter to President Bush on Thursday urging him not to rescind the moratorium, which was first put in place by George H.W. Bush in 1990, following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska's Prince William Sound.
