President Bush is considering lifting a 17-year-old ban on oil and gas exploration in rich fishing waters off the coast of southwestern Alaska, a White House spokeswoman said Friday.
The potential for drilling in Bristol Bay, home of the world's largest sockeye salmon run, has alarmed environmental groups, who say it's part of a larger effort to expand domestic oil and gas development into areas now off limits.
David Gordon, executive director of Pacific Environment, said his group has heard from several sources within the energy industry that Bush could lift the moratorium within the next few weeks.
