As Richard N. L. Andrews indicates in his insightful piece, "Learning From History: U.S. Environmental Politics, Policies, and the Common Good" (starting on page 28), the modern environmental movement began in 1970 with the inaugural Earth Day and the National Environmental Policy Act. The book from which this article is excerpted covers the history leading up to the environmental era, and the article goes on to show that the decade after it was particularly fruitful in terms of new federal environmental regulations, thereby setting the stage for future developments.
