Dec. 16--When children sing about dreidels during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, a traditional song describes the little toy as made from clay. Nowadays, the four-sided spinning tops are toys often made from plastic.
But collectible dreidels (pronounced DRAY-dle) are crafted from wood, metal, porcelain, silver and even ceramic.
Shelly Portnoy, of York County, has a collection of about 60 dreidels, but her favorite is the one that started her collection. It's a special ceramic one she got in Connecticut designed by Eran Grebler. When a person spins it, the four sides stretch out like one of those carnival rides with ...
