When Kenneth David Smyers came to trial this month on charges that he sexually attacked five female co-workers, television and newspaper photographers were free to take his picture in the courtroom. But his accusers were shielded by state law from the glare of the cameras.
A statute prohibits the photographing of alleged victims of sex crimes while they are in the courtroom, a protection that is not afforded to victims who have been mugged or stabbed or subjected to any other type of crime.
