A move by the Massachusetts Senate and continuing financial troubles at the Bank of New England in Boston - highlighted Tuesday by an announcement that the company's chief executive officer would be replaced - have combined to spark speculation that Fleet/ Norstar Financial Group may try to acquire the super-regional.
Neither officials from Fleet/Norstar nor from the Bank of New England would comment Tuesday on the speculation, but analysts said the talk was based on three elements:
