Bryan Shelton of Huntsville, AL, inspired by Lori McNeil's upset over defending champ Steffi Graf in the Ladies' Singles at Wimbledon, posted an upset of his own.
Shelton, 28, thoroughly thrashed No. 2 seed Michael Stich of Germany 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in Wimbledon, England, becoming the second Black player to triumph against the odds at the prestigious tournament in the first week of competition.
"Lori McNeil's victory was inspirational," said Shelton, who frequents as her mixed doubles partner. "I'm very good friends with Lori, and I know what she's capable of doing. She proved it."
