There's no doubt about it, August is the peak for annuals. Since I try to grow some new varieties each year, it's fun to see how my plants compare to the catalog descriptions.
One plant that grew well for me was Nicotiana sylvestris. A perennial in its native Argentina, it makes a spectaculal addition to the annual garden in colder climates. The plants must be started early indoors in order to reach blooming size before frost.
I planted two groups of these plants in my annual border. One group, located in full sun and surrounded by other annual flowers, is now 6 feet tall. Four feet of that height is the plant itself, ...
