Once upon a time, as all good stories begin, an old man walked out of the mountains with a wondrous story.

He told a tale of helping a stout little man in old-fashioned clothing carry a keg of liquor up a mountain, where they came upon a group of similarly dressed men. He drank from the keg he helped carry - and fell asleep for 20 years.

The story of Rip Van Winkle, the cheerful ne'er-do-well, and his big sleep has long been a favorite of children of all ages. It first appeared in Washington Irving's "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent" (Heritage Press, 1939).
