Reversing a half- century trend, the suicide rate among elderly Americans steadily increased in the 1980s, according to government records.
The 25 percent increase from 1981 to 1986 perplexes health care experts, who note that the elderly are generally more financially secure, healthier, and live longer than their forebears. But some experts speculate that the technological advances extending the lives of the elderly sometimes bring a quality of life that they cannot accept.
"There's no other group showing that kind of an increase," John L. McIntosh, associate professor of psychology at Indiana University, said this week. ...
