Students, defying Communist Party authorities, marched on campuses today to proclaim the start of a class boycott they said is part of a long-range pro- democracy campaign that will feature an independent newspaper, press spokesmen and fund-raising.
Leaders claimed total participation in the boycott.
As classes opened this morning, many students at Beijing University and other campuses in the capital were absent from class in the beginning of the organized boycott, and the strike was a topic of excited conversation among both students and members of university staffs.
