Jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck says in the 1940s he predicted, "The jazz world would be like a mosaic or sponge, and become a universal medium for the music of the world."
That vision has come to pass in recent years, through the proliferation of world music programs on college campuses and professional stages, where courses and concerts now feature hybrids of sound, blending folk elements with instruments and musical ideas borrowed from many different cultures.
Whether that music can or should be called jazz, as Brubeck suggests, is currently under debate, but the vision remains a true one.
