Lucille Ball, the red-headed queen of comedy, died this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, eight days after emergency open-heart surgery. She was 77.
Ball, whose career spanned six decades, died after suffering a full cardiac arrest at about 5 a.m., hospital spokesman Ron Wise said.
Doctors had initially been optimistic about Ball's chances for recovery from the surgery and the death was a surprise.
"It was totally unexpected," Wise said. "There was nothing in the previous week that would have indicated this at all. The response (by doctors) was instantaneous but they were unable to revive her.
