The vast national hospital in Kenya with its thousands of beds seemed like "Africa's version of Cook County Hospital," said Dr. William De Luca of Albany. But it was far more than just a crowded health-care center.
"It was dirty and backward" and lacking in so many services that parents had to carry their children back and forth to the surgery, said De Luca, a plastic surgeon.
During the two weeks in November that he volunteered his surgical skills at the Kenya hospital, De Luca said, "I did as many cases as in my 10 years of practice."
