Gardeners can thank a frustrated Texan for the invention of the weed whacker and with it, the birth of an industry bent on helping us keep our lawns and gardens neat.

It was just 17 years ago when George Ballas figured there had to be a better way to keep the grass from growing around the gnarled roots of his two big oaks.

His answer was found in an empty popcorn can, laced with nylon fishing line and mounted on a lawn edger. It was noisy, but worked. Weeds flew and so did grass and dirt and Americans had new muscle in the yard.
