Each Monday at 7 p.m., Doug Jesmain's students file into a small arts classroom, lay out their tools and begin working on their project of the moment.
A few of the students in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District's adult evening division are beginners, but most have taken several classes with Jesmain. The 83-year-old woodcarver has taught for about 18 years in the evening program.
Joe Widmer, 70, of Glenville carefully removes the wood around the outline of a bird, carved in relief on a plaque. A retiree, Widmer has been in four of Jesmain's classes. "This is what keeps you young," he said.
