Thousands of Georgians seeking greater political and economic autonomy from Moscow continued to hold demonstrations and strikes in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi Saturday, as the Soviet authorities stationed tanks in crowded streets.
The tanks rolled into the city Friday night and remained, apparently without incident, alongside crowds of people carrying placards denouncing "Russian imperialism" and calling for greater autonomy for the republic, according to telephone interviews with people in the city.
