Muslims throughout the United States began fasting this morning
as the holy month of Ramadan began at dawn.
Until the next new moon, devout Muslims won't eat or drink from the time they see the first light of morning until the sun sets at night, commemorating the revelation of the Koran from Allah to the prophet Mohammed through the angel Gabriel.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, with profession of belief, prayer, pilgrimage to Mecca and alms.
