To a stranger, the signs along the Alcove Reservoir in outer Albany County must seem odd - certainly out of keeping with the tranquil, surrounding rural beauty devoid of any commercial signage.
"No Mercury Pollution Here."
"Keep Mercury Out."
There's no mistaking what's happened out here. It's war. Exactly 150 years ago, the anti-renters in this neck of the woods asserted themselves against the heirs of Stephen, the "good" patroon, and eventually brought down an unjust feudal system that had existed for nearly 200 years.
They fought for their rights then, and they're doing it now.
