Soon after the 1980 Winter Olympics, this tiny Adirondack village quietly tucked in the shadow of Whiteface Mountain was mired in an economic bog. The Games had come and gone, leaving behind little more than a wider road into town, a couple of clinical-looking hotels, and fading hope.

The Athlete's Village in nearby Ray Brook

was about the most tangible benefit. It had been turned into a minimum-security prison, providing some jobs in a region with soaring unemployment.

The iron-ore mines in Essex County were sealed in the '70s. Logging was down to a crawl. Tourists had few reasons to come by.
