While searching through my houseplant references, I came upon the following gem: "The best potting mixture for clivias consists of rotted turf, rotted beech leaves, and rotted cow manure, with two tablespoons of dried blood, hoof and horn, and bone meal added to each potful of compost."

This tidbit is not from some 19th century garden tome, as you might expect, but from a European book published in 1984, translated and edited for American readers. If I were a beginning gardener, instructions like that would scare me away. How could I grow a plant when I cannot provide the proper soil?
