As it did some 20 years earlier, in a different arena, the traffic seemed to part for Gale Sayers. He glided effortlessly across the floor of a crowded room, gracefully slipping through holes so narrow one could almost imagine the No.40 stamped on the back of his black tuxedo.
In his wake there were no fallen, twisted bodies, no outstretched arms lunging helplessly at a rabbit in a football uniform. There were, however, slack jaws and wide eyes too numerous to mention, some painted on the faces of boys whose exposure to Sayers began long after his career had ended.
